Oprah Winfrey

One of my favorite things to do is to read with my kids before bed. It was what my dad did with me when I was young. I still remember him reading A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle to me. This year, I jumped at the chance to read it with my daughter. She loved it so much that we also read A Wind at the Door, and will eventually read the entire series. When she saw that A Wrinkle in Time was about to come out in the movie theatre, she was beside herself with excitement. She cannot wait to see it! I also can't wait to see it with her.

I love the fact that it is a story with a young female lead, Meg Murry (played by Storm Reid), who is smart and brave. It encourages girls, like my daughter, that they can succeed and be the strong heroes in their own life. Of course, some of the other main characters are the eccentric Mrs. Which (played by Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit (played by Reese Witherspoon), and Mrs. Who (played by Mindy Kaling).

Because we've read the book, and will go see the movie, I thought it was time to make her a fun school lunch based on the story. I went back and forth on the theme and look of the lunch but finally landed on putting Mrs. Which front and center. The movie posters featuring her are so striking that I thought it would be fitting. Much of the promo art is colorful and bright so I mixed together a yogurt side dish to reflect that. I also wanted to throwback to the old book so I included a rainbow (like the one on the cover). I made it all in an Easy Lunch Boxes container. For all of the ingredients, see my recipe below!

Ingredients: 1 Apple, lemon juice, 2 slices whole wheat bread, sliced cheese, sliced turkey, vanilla yogurt, food coloring (purple, blue, and pink), sweet peppers, silver sprinkle balls, blue candy ball, fondant (blue, white, and black).

Directions:
1. Slice an apple into noodle shape using a spiralizer. I used an entire apple and then soaked the spirals in lemon juice to prevent browning. Cut two slices of bread into half circle shapes and put meat and cheese between the slices. Place in main compartment of lunchbox.

2. Cut the nose out of a scarp of bread and glue it on with a little honey. That is also how I got the sliver sprinkle balls, and the larger blue candy ball, to stick. I used fondant to create the eye design. It's easy to use and will stick together easily. Arrange the apple "noodles" all around the sandwich to create the iconic hair.

3. Cut the ends off of red, orange, and yellow sweet peppers and arrange them like a rainbow in the side compartment.

4. Use food coloring to dye a little yogurt into the shade of the three colors. Spoon in the three separate colors and then swirl them together. Top with silver sprinkles if you like, but it's not necessary.

5. Finish by seeing the movie and reading the book together!
